Printing & Saving
Most users will be familiar with the Print and Save functions of their preferred browser, but may nevertheless have queries because of the non-standard nature of some of the data presented in the facility. A summary is provided here, with further details in the sections on ‘Textual Data’, ‘2D view’ and ‘3D view’.
Printing
- Main (not pop-up) web pages will give a printout restricted to the tabular sections.
- Text and graphics in pop-up pages should print in the usual way. If the menu bar is not available, use control-P (Windows) or command-P (Mac) from the keyboard.
Saving
- Some browsers do not allow web pages to be saved as plain text, so it may be best to save tabular data from the ‘Text’ pop-ups. If the menu bar is not available, use control-S (Windows) or command-S (Mac) from the keyboard. It will generally be necessary to give the file a meaningful name and ensure that it has a ‘.txt’ extension.
- Two-dimensional graphics can be saved in the usual manner. In Windows, click on the graphic with the right-mouse button and select the appropriate menu choice, or hover the mouse over the graphic and click on the Save icon on the floating menu-bar that appears. On the Mac, right-click or control-click on the graphic and select from the menu, or simply drag the graphic to the desktop. It will generally be necessary to give the file a meaningful name, and you may have to ensure that it has a ‘.gif’ or ‘.png’ extension, as appropriate.
- There is no way to save the three-dimensional graphics as such, although you can obviously view the PDB file of the protein in your own desktop protein-graphics application and use any recording facility that it may have. The JSmol drop-down menu has a series of options under File > Export for saving as two-dimensional images in various formats (and also two 3D formats). These display in a new window either as the graphic or as textual program instructions if the format is not supported by the web browser.
